Self-driving vehicles are slowly appearing on our roads, in the most varied forms and versions. While autopilot systems for transport aircraft and military drones have been a reality for decades, civil aviation has not yet been able to benefit from these technologies. This requires the synergy of a multitude of sensors producing huge amounts of data every second.
The speed and characteristics of a data network based on light waves can open up enormous possibilities for localisation and autonomous driving systems, on the road and in the air. In a few years, we may not only have self-driving cars, but also passenger planes that can take off and land autonomously and in complete safety.
Our photonics technology allows us to overcome the constraints and limitations of GPS to unlock autonomous driving for vehicles and passenger aircraft. For example, we are even able to design systems capable of handling the most delicate phases of aircraft piloting, typically take-off and landing.
